Dr Carmody performs foot, ankle and knee surgery including arthroscopic procedures, instability surgery and fracture management.

Dr David Carmody earned his medical degree from Sydney University in 1996 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2006. He completed advanced subspecialty training in foot and ankle surgery in Bristol, UK, under Mr Ian Winson, a leading figure in arthroscopic foot and ankle surgery and President of the European Foot and Ankle Society.

He also undertook knee surgery fellowships in Belgium with Dr Johan Bellemans and Dr Jan Victor, as well as in Lyon, France, with Professor Philippe Neyret. Dr Carmody has published extensively on knee surgery, with a focus on knee replacements, and remains an active contributor to the North Sydney Orthopaedic Research Group. His expertise includes treating arthritis, performing knee replacements, reconstructions, and arthroscopic procedures.

Dr Carmody’s primary interest lies in sports-related injuries of the foot and ankle. His training emphasised surgical techniques for athletic injuries, including arthroscopic procedures, and treating tendon conditions, instability, cartilage damage, and arthritis. He also specialises in managing foot and ankle fractures. He continues to conduct research on foot and ankle surgical techniques and is a member of both the North Sydney Orthopaedic Research Group and the Australian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Dr Carmody’s work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, and he has presented his findings at conferences nationally and internationally. His research on spinal cord injuries in Australian footballers earned him the “Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Applied Research in Sports Medicine by a Research Team” at the 2005 NSW Sports Safety Scheme Awards.

Outside of medicine, Dr Carmody is passionate about sports. He enjoys following all football codes and actively participates in cricket, soccer, and golf.

Dr Carmody consults at Peninsula Orthopaedics at Northern Beaches Hospital and North Sydney Orthopaedic in the Mater Clinic . He performs private surgeries at the Northern Beaches Hospital in Frenchs Forest and the Mater Hospital in North Sydney. He has a public waitlist at Northern Beaches Hospital and also travels to Dubbo to consult and operate.
