MBBS (Hons) FRACS (Orth) BAppSc (Physio) FAOrthA

Growing up in Sydney, Marcus developed a passion for fitness and participated in various sports, which inevitably led to his fair share of injuries.

These experiences inspired him to study Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney, driven by a desire to make meaningful improvements to people's quality of life—including his own. After graduating, he provided physiotherapy support to rugby, netball, soccer, and water polo teams at both club and state levels.

After several years as a Physiotherapist, he realised he could make an even greater impact by pursuing a career in Medicine. This decision was not taken lightly, as it required an additional 15 years of study to become a fully qualified Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Dr Chia earned his Medical degree with Honours from the University of Sydney and completed both Basic and Advanced Surgical Training in Orthopaedic Surgery through the Sydney training program. Recognising the value of further specialisation, he dedicated an additional year to advanced training under Dr Laurent Lafosse at the Alps Surgery Institute in Annecy, France—a world-renowned expert in shoulder surgery. While he immersed himself in learning cutting-edge techniques, his wife and three sons enjoyed the beauty of Annecy—a win for everyone!

This fellowship equipped him with expertise in modern arthroscopic and open surgical techniques, including innovative procedures pioneered by Dr. Lafosse, such as the Arthroscopic Latarjet Procedure for shoulder instability and the arthroscopic suprascapular nerve release. During his time in France, he also helped organise and demonstrate at the 5th Annecy Live Surgery International Shoulder Advanced Course, which hosted over 1,000 participants from 57 countries. Inspired by his mentor, he remains dedicated to advancing the possibilities of arthroscopic surgery.

Following his time in France, he moved to the UK for further subspecialty training in Shoulder and Elbow surgery at Brighton and Sussex University Hospital NHS Trust. He also had the opportunity to learn from other leading Shoulder and Elbow surgeons in the UK, South Africa, and the United States.

Today, as a member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, Dr Chia strives to deliver the highest standard of Orthopaedic care. He actively contributes to research, has published articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has been invited to speak at national and international conferences. He currently performs surgeries at Sydney Adventist Hospital and Northern Beaches Hospital.

When he is not working, he unwinds by surfing and spending time with his supportive and wonderful family.
